For Nokia Lumia's you can also use Zune itself, the external tool is handy, but from zune it is the official way.
Small guide:
1) Open zune, connect phone, check for updates and count how many second it takes to check to say it is up to date.
2) From that number (my zune did 7 seconds about it) remove 1~2 seconds, so for me that is 5.
3) Check for updates again, disconnect internet after 5 seconds, the checks runs longer and say's that there is a update available, while just a minute ago it didn't.
If you get an error that it can't check, you broke the internet connection to soon, and if it is up-to-date, you are to late..
4) After you tried and get the update, let it run, there are 3 in total!, the final one is the 7.8 one.
Updates vary how long it takes, each one can take between 5 and 30 minutes..
But 1 thing I noticed, that the sound volume has that bug again in the lumia, that it is very low, 30/30 now is 20/30 on the 7.5 version.
