If its clearly stated that Mac OS 9 can only boot in classic mode on certain Macs, then it cannot boot into Mac OS 9. If you don't like classic mode, then I suggest you get Sheepshaver to emulate a capable Mac of booting Mac OS 9. However, don't expect near native performance and it cannot boot Mac OS 9 versions later than 9.0.4 because the MMU emulation isn't complete.
