Yes, there are a bunch of things that run on CE! I still use my Cassiopeia E-125 that runs Windows CE 3.0, use it to keep track of my excersize hours -using SpreadCE, a spreadsheet- and to listen to music using GSPlayer.

If you'd like I could provide you some programs I keep from the period I was using a E-100 that ran under CE 2.11. There could be some compatibility issues since they're for a newer version of CE and because they were made for a Palm-Size PC and not a Handheld PC (which is the correct name for the form factor your Compaq device is).Yes please, see if there's anything I could use

Since you mentioned other pieces of software that run on Windows CE, I suggest you to check out this:

Didn't know they are still making new versions of Pocket DOS. The one I have is 1.02.0... from 2000!They aren't. Also, it's paid software, for newer handhelds, and kind of rubbish, haha.

Well for writing applications for it, the IDE for windows that should still support Windows CE 1.0 should be Microsoft Embedded Visual Tools 3.0 or 4.0 (4.0 being the last version). They seem to be a bit harder to track down links for now than it was 5 or so years ago when I last played around with them (they used to be available straight from MS but I can't find the correct page anymore)

For Microsoft Embedded Visual Tools 3.0 I found it at: http://www.hpcfactor.com/downloads/details.asp?r=0D692AFF-501F-48D1-9D1C-C494078E201D%20(Unfortunatly%20they%20require%20registration%20to%20download)
For Microsoft Embedded Visual C++ 4.0: http://download.cnet.com/Microsoft-eMbedded-Visual-C/3000-2212_4-10108490.html
(Or perhaps they may be archived on the ftp server)

As for developing on the device I found Joe Blow's Windows CE 1.0 Page which has:
BasiCE (a BASIC interpreter) and Python CE (Linked to the sh3 version for your device).

Having just found that site for the first time myself; I know I'll be installing quite a few tomorrow on my Philips Velo.
Hope this helps.Thanks, I've just downloaded that, and PocketC too when the thing actually arrives, I should have plenty of software ready to play with ^_^
