There is an hardware problem. Check the sound hardware.
Did you read the original post? He said that the default sounds play.
Do mp3 files such as the sample music play fine? If they do, all is fine. If they don't, there's something wrong with WMP.
I'm sure you can live with the default sound scheme.
Does the problem happen on other computers if you use the same install media? Could very well be corruption of some sort.
