With all that Blue stuff going around Microsoft lately, Google didn't want to be left behind and introduced its new product - Gmail Blue!
Thats exactly what I was thinking when I saw this! I wonder if they actually intended this to be a reference to Windows Blue...
There's a few other things that make me think it's a not-so-subtle dig at Microsoft.
The different colours they apparently tried - Orange, Brown and Yellow are all colours MS have tried in different branding schemes over the past 5 years. Orange and Yellow have largely been in Office, but it was the dig at "Brown" being a "total disaster" that made me suspicious. Much of Zune's marketing material was done with the brown Zune, widely considered a total disaster in terms of colour picks.
Of course, there's the whole "completely redesign and recreate something while keeping it exactly the same". And the whole mockery of a more monotone UI and denial of customisation options.
Or maybe I'm just paranoid. That's probably true either way.
I agree, it does seem they were hinting at dissing Microsoft.
