There is a way to update the displayed name of processors, but it's a bit over my head so I have never tried it. The "codes" used to identify the CPU's are contained in a .SYS file under Windows 98. Of course only codes for CPU's existing at the time are included, hence 98 cannot identify any P4 chips, while Windows ME can identify a few of the early ones. See this thread at MSFN.
Windows 95 OSR 2.5 reports my 3.4GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition as a Pentium Pro.
