Even why must have to use "Metro" Apps? If you like them, fine, use them! If you don't, chose different Apps from different location! It's just up to the user and MS didn't dictate that you "Must" use the Apps from Windows-Store. Same you didn't need to use Windows 8, nobody, which includes MS, dictates you must, you could just carry on use your old Windows, which version that ever might be!
On the other hand, there many way ending in "Rome" or "Redmond" in this case. MSD let chose yourself what way you like to go. And as AlphaBeta wrote above, there also some simple solutions, Visual Studio is one of them. It's just the need to figure out what all could be done to archive what we're looking for.
