QEMU claims to emulate a 486, but it is misleading at best. An example I am much familiar with (filed a bug report years ago), is Gentoo build for 486 boots on QEMU (that is how they test it), but it faults immediately on a real 486. Because none of the Gentoo developers could reproduce it, since they didn't have real hardware, they closed the bug. However, it illustrated something amiss with pure 486 emulation
I must say I do thoroughly agree with this. In fact I'm pretty sure I read about this bug between '06 and '09. Might not have been Gentoo but I can't remember that well. Either way, saying XP on a 486 and not actually doing it on the real deal is a complete lie as well in my case. I consider the fact you say Windows XP is Whistler 2250 (a very premature build, merely 55 build numbers from 2000) is enough to consider XP. You then say replacing the kernel will give you a working XP. I am sorry but this is not the case. Replacing the kernel is replacing the whole underlying OS. All you will essentially be doing is porting the XP user layer to 2000 (which you probably wouldn't even be able to get right anyway from a technical standpoint) which is NOT Windows XP at the end of the day, nor is it anywhere near really. If I am completely honest, no offence, I consider this project a hoax. The whole point of winhistory's stunt was to see how low they could go specification wise with an XP installation CD. I fail to see how your project mirrors this. May I also take this opportunity to say no offence but you clearly don't know what you are actually doing with this project. I suggest you learn about NT a little bit more before continuing.
