It suprised me pretty good when I first brought home my Dell System 310 from e-waste. I plugged it in, flipped the switch, and "sssss-POP-...-sssssss." One of the caps in the PSU let out the magic smoke. It didn't turn off, though. It booted right into DOS and no damage (other than the cap) had occurred!
Or, there's the time that sparks started flying out of my first iMac G3 (AIO) and the flyback transformer killed itself.
