Re: Torrenting Windows + ISP

The way I saw it was that torrenting Consumer Preview was no different than if someone who had downloaded it when Microsoft had it up on their site had sent me a copy.

This would be an infringement of the End User Licence Agreement and copyright infringement still.

The simplest way to think of it is that it is no different to a full boxed copy of Windows, with the following exceptions:

The price of the software is £0.00/$0.00/€0.00

The licence is time limited - it lasts until the timebomb date.

The licence grants Microsoft greater data collection rights.
You have no redistribution rights. You have no right to use it beyond the end of the evaluation period. Make no mistake - public betas are for Microsoft's benefit and their's alone. They make sure as such from a legal position.

Ironically, I've been hosting betas for a good eight years now, and hell, plenty of straight up warez too, the only time Microsoft has got in touch with a site hosted on my server regarding betas was when Ludacris mirrored the Windows 7 Public Beta on his site, during the public beta.

Really? Surprised by that as SPs are free to download. In fact I didn't think XP itself was abandonware yet.
Yes, really. But XP RTM, SP1, and SP2 are abandonware now because they fit all the criteria. Their over 10 years old and they are no longer in support.

Thanks! It was nice to see it actually kinda exists. Not just forgotten in the old e3 builds. Shame that it's missing alot of the assets tho.
The upconvertion sounds like a really good idea! I would love to check it out once your done with it.

tor has been compromised some months ago

Not really. Any exploit should had been patched almost immediately, especially since the Tor Project actively encourages attacks so that they can patch it quickly.

afaik nsa has priviledge to... well you know

This is a nice piece of kit to have around, and should be quite useful to those of us that are interested in getting old DOS apps built and potentially fixed. Thanks for contributing this pack!

It should just be a setting for the ProductType that sets what edition the kernel and shell represent. I don't recall exactly what bits need to be set, but I think the main identity of the product is defined by the fore-mentioned registry key. At least, that's usually what a certain tweaking program would do (among other things) back in the day. (We can't go around talking about that tool, though, since it was -and is- still potentially license-breaking, and very gray-area).

When Kenneth built the Fusion kernel, he had documented exactly what bits needed changing for 2003's kernel to switch into the server mode, but I cannot recall just how much of that translated back to the NT4/5 kernel. I really think it was just the bit I mentioned above.

No internet connection in Windows FLP?!

I've installed Windows Fundamentals For Legacy PCs in VMware Workstation 8. The installation went all good but there's only a problem: I can't use the Internet in that VM! I need to use a bridged connection between the host and the VM. In the device manager the only network adapter installed is "Ethernet adapter" with the exclamation mark. How can I solve this? Thanks

EDIT: solved changing the adapter to "vmxnet"

Oh dear. Okay, here we go with some basic network troubleshooting for you:

- check that your network connection is connected to the correct network adapter of your host (i.e. your physical network instead of the VMnet ones)
- did you set the correct IP address in the guest for your network?
- If you use DHCP, check your server for DCHPREQUEST/DHCPOFFER packets, or try using a static IP address instead
- did you check the "connected" checkbox in the VM settings?
- if you use Wifi try switching to a cable connection as some Wifi adapters don't support multiple (i.e. virtual) MAC addresses that are required by VMware

....there are probably lots of other reasons why the network in a VMware guest won't work, these are just the first things to check from the top of my head

I made OpenNT 4.5 SERVER

I was thinking is it possible to make OpenNT server, not workstation.
Everything is possible. So i started: I downloaded old-src, and old-sdk, installed Windows XP SP3 into virtual machine, and started trying. At first I built just OpenNT with zTestbuild. I rewrited almost whole cdimg to be compatible with my system. Then I added some stuff from original Windows NT 4.0 source, added domain management system and IIS from server cd, because I didn't find them sources. Then recompiled source with sizzle. So now I have NT 4.5 server. Whole work took about 14 hours, I wrote about 50 lines of code by myself. Here is what I have http://www.betaarchive.com/imageupload/2016-01/1452012160.th.99445.png
However there is still many issues: It can't work as domain controller, even if you select Primary domain controller, it will not install domain administration tools. Network installation is difficult, but possible.
If you want to download and test it, here is link https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrUVr8J
I recommend to download VirtualBox, install it, then download this file https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrUVr8J/VboxPreBuilt/VboxPreBuilt.rar
In this image network is preconfigured, IIS installed, installed VBOX additions.
If you want to install it by yourself download this https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrU ... T45SRV.rar
unpack, and install, DO NOT install IIS. Select Stand-Alone server. Key is here https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrUVr8J/Information/CD-Key.txt
If you try to install network, you'll be prompted for workstation cd. You can download it here https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrUVr8J/Images/NT45Wks_x86fre-sr687.rar
More screenshots are here https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrUVr8J/Screenshots/
Link to whole repository: https://cloud.mail.ru/public/4nzX/JuQrUVr8J
It still shows ,,built by IDW1-stephanos", because i forgot edit ntverp.h
I think next i'm going to make openNT embedded

The exclamation point next the the text "ethernet adapter" means something is wrong with the device.
Double click on the text "ethernet adapter". In the dialog box that appears, there will be a large text box that tells you what the problem is.

I think that device cannot start due corrupt or wrong drive. Try reinstall it or install guest additions. Before attempting to setup network, at first you must ensure that all nic drivers are correct and working.

It is very likely that your Ethernet driver is not installed on the host machine. Go to your PC manufacturers website and try (re)installing it. If you'd like I can help you find it. You'll need to send me your PC's model number through PM.
