I mean, I use Windows 8 for my actual "doing work" computer as boot up time on SSD is quick, has Trim support and my laptops wont technically run anything older than Vista due to ACPI issues. I also love the Windows 8 start screen for all my programs on my large monitor as they can fill the screen for single click instead of scrolling or typing.
However, Windows XP while outdated is certainly not unusable if your computer can run it or you only have a HDD. I can not think of a single program that I currently use on a day to day basis (Other than maybe new versions of IE which i only use if Chrome does not render correctly) that don't work fine on XP. I am not a gamer, nor do I use specialised 64 bit only video editing or 3D modeling programs that really make use of newer operating systems.
I mean, I only use Office 2010, Skype, iTunes, VLC, Chrome, Spotify, the odd old game, remote desktop, Visual Studio 2010. All are fine on XP.
The only thing I do miss when using XP are Aero Snap and the Search functions.
My local University used Windows XP up to a couple of years ago, and have found since that Windows 7 takes longer to load.
I still use Windows XP on my old devices I have lying around due to the fact with lower hardware, things just run quicker. Videos work better, flash seems to run quicker. While Win 8 is definitely quicker than Vista/7, on single core hardware and older Dual cores, XP just seems more optimised. I have found the same with versions of office, where while 2013 is nice with its fancy graphics and cloud integration, 2000/3 just loads quicker and can get work done quicker.
