Follow the link to MSFN, if you haven't already. I believe all of the so-called "limitations" of Windows 9x listed in this thread so far, and many others, have been eliminated by the work of a few dedicated individuals, when Microsoft could not be bothered to do so.

48Bit LBA - solved
Multi-Core processors - irrelevant, 9x cannot use the other cores but they are ignored
USB2 support - available
USB Storage device support - available

Some solutions are not free, but the solutions exist. For example, you can use up to 4GB of RAM under 9x with RLoew's RAM Limitation Patch, and he also provides a SATA support update.

There also seems to be a widespread misconception that 9x will not perform well on new"er" hardware (I'm speaking of P4 era), and that 2K/XP will run better. There is no basis or logical reasoning for this whatsoever. At this point, I would never even consider running anything LESS than a P4 with 9x. Its a situation where the hardware finally caught up with the software. You have not experienced Windows 9x until you run it on a high-end P4 system.
